Whenever I say that my favorite food is beef intestines, almost every foreigner says that they can't believe. Even some people don`t know what intestines are. When I explain what intestines are, many people say it's disgusting. Even they hate my taste.    Yes, beef intestines look disgusting because they are tubes in a cow. Beef intestines are  indigestion organizations. Although they look disgusting, they taste great and smell tasty. Some say that intestines are not clean food, but it's not true. They are very clean food because people wash it very strictly. And they have a lot of collagen which is good for women's skin. Also intestines are really good for men's stamina.                The reason that I strongly like intestines is not only they are good for health, but also it's because of the atmosphere. I eat intestines always with my true friends at night. We have some serious conversation and we release our stress or sadness through that time. The atmosphere makes intestines' flavor better and the conversation we have makes me feel better. That's why I like to eat intestines.

 Korean New Year's Day

 

Korea has two big national holidays. One is 'Chu Seok', the national holiday similar to that of the U.S. called Thanks giving day. The other is the New Year's Day that is called 'Seol Nal' in Korean. There are some of interesting traditions on both Seol Nal and Chu Seok and I will introduce some of traditions mainly about Seol Nal.

 

On the day of Seol Nal, Koreans visit their grandparents, parents, or relatives to enjoy the New Year together. One of the most interesting traditions is New Year's bow that Koreans give to seniors. The aim of this tradition is largely for wishing the better health of seniors who get the bows and the youngers get cash gifts from seniors for giving bows. What many Koreans like in the day is 'dduk-guk' which is a soup cooked with slices of rice cake, eggs, beef and a lot of vegetables. There's an old saying in Korea related to this food that eating dduk-guk makes a child grown a year older. There's one more interesting tradition. In the morning of Seol Nal, Koreans hold a memorial service for ancestors.

 

There is, however, a problem related to major Korean holidays. It's severe traffic congestion. Since almost all of Koreans leave their home for visiting relatives or seniors, almost all of highways and roads are crowded with cars making travel hours at least 3 times longer than typical days. But it also can be a good point considering the duration of the major holidays. Due to the heavy traffic problems that take many hours from travelers, it's been a tradition that the national holidays should be continued at least for three days.

Discount? Enuri!

 

             Suppose you buy apples for 3,000 won, bananas for 3,000 won and oranges for 5,000 won. A Canadian fruit seller prices them at 11,000 won. A Chinese fruit seller prices them at 11,000 won as well. However, a Korean fruit seller may sell them to you for 10,000 won. The reason is "Enuri" Enuri, which is similar to a special discount, is one of unique cultural traditions in Korea.

             People in Korea feel a deep affection between people through Enuri. For examples, when you go to the Korean traditional markets, you will find a seller and a customer talking so loudly. Don't misunderstand that they raise their voice. Maybe they are just doing Enuri. The customer asks the seller to give discount or throw in a few more. Enuri, which is a pure Korean word, means that sellers can give customers a discount or more goods at their discretion. But there is one big difference between discount and Enuri. Through Enuri, you can buy a product below its production price. Although sellers make a loss for the first time, they get regular customers, because they go to the same store with thanks for Enuri. In addition to the commercial reason, sellers who offer Enuri care not only themselves but also their customers. Koreans have a strong sense of solidarity and they hope to be wealthy all together. Therefore, people share what they have with others in order to help each other.

             Nowadays, Instead of the Korean traditional markets, websites where people sell and buy with Enuri are popping up. Still, Enuri spirit has disappeared gradually. In a hard-hearted modern society, Enuri can remind people of love and affection.

Pungmulnori

 In western society, there is orchestra, In Korea, there is 'Pungmulnori' which encounters various kinds of Korean traditional musical instruments. Pungmulnori originated from very old history of Korea. Farmers formed pungmylnori band to play music for various ceremonies mostly related to farming. Pungmulnori contains culture and many feelings of Korean farmers.

Everything about pungmulnori is related to farming. That is because pungmulnori is the music of farmers. First, although there are many musical instruments, there are four main instruments that lead the band. They are jing, book, kkwaenggwari, and janggu. Each of them represents nature since nature is the most important factor to consider when farming. In fact, jing has the sound of wind, while book sounds like cloud. Janggu represents rain and kkwaenggwari sounds like thunder. Moreover, most of the time, people formed pungmulnori band to lessen their hardship of farming and strengthen themselves by singing and dancing. They also played at the start of farming season to pray for successful harvest and at the end of the season to thank the nature. In this respect, Korean ancestors gained energy and confidence through pungmulnori.

 Recently, as lesser people have interest in pungmulnori, a famous janggu player Kim Duk Soo remodeled pungmulnori to samulnori. Samulnori encounters much fewer number of instruments but equally sounds energetic as pungmulnori. What is important is that modern people are still interested and eager to maintain old tradition.

Chinese Culture

According to the chinese 50000 years history, there have kinds of traditional festivals. And depends on traditional festivals which day have we are own custom like food and which food is the most important in festivals day. I am going to talk about the days DongZhi Jie(Winter Solstice), DuanWu Jie(Dragon Boat Festival),YuanXiao Jie(the Lantern Festival),ZhongQiu Jie(the Moon Festival ) and so on.

 

First, Winter Solstice which days we eat HunDun which is similar with dumpling, But their very different. HunDun just boil in the water never for fry and the shape of skin is square and the dumpling is staple food but HunDun is almost snack. The other food we have to eat is Tangyuan, which is made of rice inside of seame and peanut.

 

Second is Dragon Boat Festival, in that days we always prepare eating glutinous rice dumplimg. Which's made of leaf cover with rice and tie with thread and steamed. Which is my favorite food.

 

Third is the Lanten Restival. In which day we eat Yuanxiao, that is also made of rice inside of seame and peanut but different with TangYuan. Yuanxiao is bigger and soft than TangYuan. But their also cousin.

 

Fourth is the moon festival which day we eat mooncake which is made of wheat flour and inside if peanut or red mean or the other things. The reason why called mooncake because of which days moon is the most round and chinese also get together eat mooncake see the round moon.

 

Chinese traditional festivals food very interesting, their have own meaning of every special food. If we did not eat festivals food in which day We could be sad or feelings uncomfortable. As the saying goes It is saying that we missing festivals food might be unluck which years.

Imagine you are at first visit in Korea. You have taken the subway to go to the place you're planning to stay while in Korea. In subway, you see a person sitting at the seat in front of you suddenly stands up. Because you are so tired and with lots of stuffs in hands, you feel to take the seat. At the very point, however, the person says to an old woman who stands a little bit far from the seat: Please take this seat. What do you think you are going to feel like? Isn't it weird that the former appoints the next person who's going to sit in there? Well, this is the moment when one of the most unique traditions of Korea appears. In Korea, there are a lot of duties for people in their attitude toward other ages.

 

 The duties in treating other ages can be divided into two parts by its subject- the elder's and the younger's. As for the elder, the old people should be the one with responsibility and wisdom. For example, when Koreans decide something important in their lives, they mostly consult with the elder people near them. Also, in New Year's Day of Korea, most Koreans having visited their parents or other elder relatives make a special bow to them and ask them some deep wisdoms of life. In contrast, the younger should respect the elder's decisions and try to reply the kindness or teachings of the elder. Especially, this can be shown well in the social custom that a son or daughter should take care of their parent as they get older.

 

It has been thought of as the main reason of these kinds of tradition that Korea had been a complete agrarian community for a long time in the past. However, Korea has changed. There is no need, or rather it's impossible for Korean people to live all along with their family. For the reason, the tradition of attitudes toward other ages, which has been inherited in the relationship with family members, has been weakened slowly.

Do you know that Koreans drink alcohol early in the morning on the first full-moon day of the lunar new year? This is called "ear-quickening wine", and Koreans drink it not to be deceived by any people. There are so many traditional things we do on the first full-moon day of the lunar new year, and each things have special meanings and proper time to do. This is because Korean ancestors thought all the time is meaningful from the night before the full-moon day to the night of the full-moon day. Koreans think that this day is really important and meaningful because they think it is another starting point of the year.

 

Like Koreans think that the day is the another starting point of the year, they also believe they can stay healthy and tranquil by doing those traditional behaviors on the proper times. About the night before the full-moon day, kids cannot sleep because there is a popular superstition that if a person sleeps on the night before the full-moon day, his eyebrows become white. I think maybe this is a just kind of kidding by adults. In the morning of the full-moon day, people wake up and break the shells of the nuts with their teeth to avoid swelling in that year. They have to say nothing until the break the shells. They also drinking ear-quickening wine. For their meal, they eat the rice made with the five cereals, and a sweet rice dish to stay healthy. At last, on the night of the full-moon day, Koreans wish their prayers to the full-moon.

 

Some of these traditional behaviors seem a bit superstitious, but through those, we can see ancestors' wisdom and thought from the past. Also, I could know how ancestors tried to live healthy and tranquil. Maybe this is one of most important things which reflect culture itself. I think we descendants have responsibility to inherit these traditional heritiges.
