Still so many Koreans have very interesting ritual. They are having on anniversary on dead people's birthday. Every culture and nation could think and remember the dead, but having anniversary and ready for so many foods seems quiet strange. But this rituals are not only just strange ceremony but have many other hidden reasons in it.

To having a ritual, there are certain rules. The food have to setted on the right place for example red foods are on the east and white food on the west. Also there is a restricted food too. So it is very careful ready for setting. Than there is a order for having ritual. First start with bow. Next move the chopstick and spoon into another food and bow again. You have to repeat it for 3~5 times. After finishing the ritual, burn the ancestor's paper tablet and eat the food used on rituals. It symbols the absorbing dead ancestor's power into us. It looks like old-fashioned but it still have a important reason. It gathers the rest family members and having a good time during the eating. It unions family bond and this was what the Korean's traditional relationship is.

For these reason, It is obvious that this rituals are not for ancestors but the us who prepares all the rituals. It helps to gather the relationship with people and have some good meal with the talk. Also they can remember the ancestor more and have the feelings of relief at when someday they will be dead because they will be memorized by the decendant too.

201003252 Fri.1-2Favorite Food Revised Version

Anyone who has had a fairly memorable child hood can remember back to a time when his or her family got together at the dining table and ate scrumptious food that is particular in their culture. The way delectable food brought the entire family together and engage in endless conversations.

When I think back of my child hood food memories, grilled cheese sandwiches was my favorite food that I at it as a meal for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I really liked the combination of toasted bread on melted cheese. It was to die for. I mean literally to die for. There was an unforgettable experience I had with my all time favorite food.

As a child I remember scurridly rushing to get home from school to take a bite of my mother's specialty, grilled cheese sandwich. The moment I stepped foot in the house the aroma of the creamy, soft, buttery smell of bread toasting on the stove permeated the entire house. May I mention that my mother was always keen on personal hygiene, with that being said, I neglected to wash my hands and plunged my filthy hands to grab a slice of the gooey cheese sandwich. Even before it reached my mouth my mother whisked me out of the kitchen and into the restroom to wash up before eating.

While washing up, all I could think about was quickly getting my hands on the melted cheesy sandwich. How I would like to savor the taste of the browned crusted wheat bread that has been lightly grilled on a buttered pan. Picturing the warmth of the bread and how it melts the cheese just the right amount. Also when the first bite is taken, and how the cheese oozes out between the breads along with a bit of butter that has been saturated into the bread. While thinking how tasty it would be, I washed up in no time.

Entering the kitchen in a tidied up manner, I took a large bite into the sandwich, perhaps I put it in my mouth a bit too deep, the cheese molded into my throat and being unable to swallow the piece of bread I started to choke. No matter how hard I tried to swallow, the bread just wouldn't budge. It was as if the cheese stiffened and clung into the walls of my throat.

My mother, startled, took me from behind and started to perform the Heimlich maneuver. She placed her fist just above my navel and used the other free hand to secure her fist and thrusted in an upward movement. She thrusted once, twice, and by the third thrust the chunk of bread covered in cheese flung out of my mouth hitting the side of the kitchen wall.

I lied down on the kitchen floor trying to make sense of the situation. Coming to my senses, I felt intense pain in my throat. It felt almost as if I had swallowed a prickly needle, not bread. Bits of cheese remained in my throat and it gave off a stench that got me queasy.  I picked myself off the floor and started at the sandwich. Normally, people would have a taste aversion after such a horrific incident. I admit, the choking was an unpleasant experience but it didn't make me dislike the grilled cheese sandwich one bit. In fact, I was happy to have survived to have eaten the sandwich.

From that day on, whenever mom makes grilled cheese sandwich, it brings my family together and not only do we enjoy the food, but we always manage to bring up my sandwich incident. My family goes on and on about why grilled cheese sandwiches are literally to die for.

Week 5 assignment: complete the essay about Korean tradition

Dongji

Do you have anything to do when the longest night comes? In Korean, we call the day 'Dongji'. Dongji is one of a Korean traditional day which has the longest night in each year. It might be on December, 15th on the lunar calendar. Though it is not considered as an important tradition nowadays, it is an interesting Korean traditional day.

Koreans did many things in Dongji. They ate two typical Dongji foods. One of them is Patjuk, which is a bowl of soup made by adzuki beans. Most Koreans ate it, because Koreans believed that adzuki beans have a special power to evade evil spirits. As people also believed that hundreds of evil spirits appear on Dongji due to its longest night, they ate a bowl of Patjuk. Burums which are sorts of nuts are another special food to bite and eat. People in Korea thought that if they break the Burums with their teeth and ate them, they can stay healthy without any diseases.

There are two activities to do at Dongji. Watching the moon on the bridge is one thing. People thought that if they prayed for their desire to the moon, it would become reality soon. Especially, couples who love each other pray for their forever love to the moon, it really works. The other thing is keeping oneself awake during all night. As there is a traditional customs that if a man fall asleep at Dongji night, rest of people staying awake make his eyebrows white to be seemed disappeared. Though I don't know the exact reason why these customs are passed down, some Koreans still do the customs.

Although nowadays Koreans have a tendency not to care so much about the events like Dongji, I think it is interesting traditional day and it is worthy to conserve. To protect this custom, I will do these activities and eat certain foods on Dongji. Why don't we carry out this customs together?

p.51 essay first draft 200901051

Ever heard of Sinterklaas? Most readers, probably never even heard of it. Sinterklaas is a tradition in Belgium on the 6th December where they commemorate Saint Nicolas who brought two children back to life. The story goes that a butcher slaughtered his two children to sell them as meat and that Saint Nicolas felt so much pity for them that he brought them back to life. That's why on the 6th of December, children are put in an extra special daylight what most children also really look forward to.

The celebration of Saint Nicolas these days is a happening that takes a certain period. It all starts two or three weeks before the 6th of December, when Saint Nicolas arrives with his loyal helper Zwarte Piet (whose skin is black as the night and dressed in colourful clothing) on a steamboat from Spain. There will be a parade which has been shown on television for the last 10 year or so. From that time until the 5th of December children from all over the country start writing letters to Saint Nicolas. The Belgian post will carefully read the tons of letters and reply back to the children with a letter from Saint Nicolas and also with a small present. Finally on the night of 5th and 6th December Saint Nicolas will visit all the children when they are asleep and bring them a present. Of course, just like with Santa Claus, often it's the parents who buy the present and say it's from Saint Nicolas. The children not only receive a present, they will also receive oranges, chocolate and speculoos. Both have often the shape of Saint Nicolas or a theme that has to do with Sinterklaas. After the 6th of December Saint Nicolas goes back to Spain with his helper Zwarte Piet, to come back the next year. This will also be shown as a parade on television. After the 6th of December, most children are already looking forward to the next Sinterklaas and try to imagine what their next present will be.

The Sinterklaas tradition does resemble a bit of the Santa Claus tradition. Just as Santa Claus it brings joy to the children who have behaved well and the bad children won't get any presents. However, the legend goes that if the children behaved badly, Zwarte Piet will put them in his bag and take them away to Spain as a punishment. Maybe this is a way to teach children that it is important to be good in life. Who knows?

Week 3 Assignment

Chicken sandwich

In my senior year, when I was preparing for college entrance examination, I had a very difficult time keeping good condition. Staying in good condition was very important in order to concentrate hard when studying. As I was very tired of studying everyday unable to do what I want, it was not easy to maintain good condition. To my surprise, however, there was one thing that made me feel energetic and eager to study. That is chicken sandwich, which is my favorite food.

There is only one reason to how chicken sandwich helped me study harder and became my favorite food. It is fantastic taste of chicken sandwich. The taste of it really stimulated my desire to eat delicious food in the toughest time of my life. It is very important to note that at the time I was in a very tired and harsh situation due to toughness of studying for college entrance examination. I desperately needed something for a diversion and that was chicken sandwich. One day, I decided to eat sandwich for dinner before heading to English class after school. So, I bought a chicken sandwich in Parrisbagutte and ate it right away. At first bite, I did not recognize, but at second bite, I was totally obsessed by the taste of it and at the moment it became my favorite food. Tenderness of chicken, freshness of vegetables, coolness of tomatoes, and softness of bread amazed me instantly. I could understood how delicious food can make people feel happy. The tasty sandwich seriously made me happy and joyful. This could be possible because I appreciate the quality, or the taste of food rather than the quantity. From that day, I constantly ate chicken sandwich and could study hard due to happy feelings.

Although it is quite an irony how I found my favorite food during my toughest time, chicken sandwich helped me a lot when I was preparing for the college entrance examination. Right now, I still am addicted to it and still desire to eat it at least twice a week. In deed, Parris baguette is the place I visit the most during week days, since chicken sandwich of it is the most delicious in my personal opinion.

Week 3 Assignment Jang Jun Hwa

200802967 Jang Jun Hwa

Sashimi Swimming in my Head

As strange as it may sound, every time I watch the movie, "The Little Mermaid", I would become hungry. Why? Because I am crazy about seafood! I have eaten and liked almost every seafood since I could chew. Especially, my favorite is sashimi, which is fresh raw fish sliced into thin pieces.

The reason I started to eat sashimi at such a young age is my grandparents. They have been living in a fishing village. When I visited them, they caught plenty of fish and prepared sashimi for me. Sometimes I used to take a fishing boat with my uncle, catch the fish at the sea and eat sashimi on the boat. In order to prepare sashimi, first of all, he made cuts along the backbone of fish to the tail, and then pulled the filet away from the body of fish. Next, both the fins and the skin were removed. He pinched the tail side and slid the knife between the skin and the meat. After my uncle sliced off thin piece, finally I could eat sashimi. It always satisfied me with the best taste. The sashimi piece was so thinly-sliced that I could see through it. It was so tender like cotton candy which melts away in the mouth. The taste of sashimi usually depends on what sauce you eat with. However, sashimi itself is light and delicate. In addition, it is not as fishy as people who have never eaten it think.

Recently I can not visit my grandparents, so there is no chance to eat sashimi which is from fish netted at sea. Even though the sashimi at sushi restaurants is not as fresh and chewy as one that I ate on the boat, I am still fond of sashimi. I can not stop thinking about it and live without it.
