Lesson from a Day of pulling out Teeth

Have you ever pretended to be sick? There are some cases that people normally pretend to be sick such as right before taking a teat, answering for a failure. Going to a dentist is one of these common cases to make people pretend to be ill. I also experience this whenever I have to go to the dentist. Unfortunately I had to get in the state once again last month. I was planning to straighten irregular teeth, and it needs for me to pull out four of my teeth which were with no problem.
When I was arriving at the center, I could see people waiting for their turn to recieve a treatment. I joined with them. Few minutes after then, I was guided to a seat. A nurse was writing something to a chart while asking me some questions. Then she checked my teeth briefly, and when she finished a doctor came. He started to extract my teeth. I had been put under anesthesia, but it was painful no matter how strong I had been put under it. After the surgery, I could not feel anything by my mouth. It's all under anesthesia. So I didn't know there were clots of blood in my mouth. When I was washing my mouth, a lot of clotted bloods were pouring out. It was disgusting. I felt dizzy. One of the nurses near me was talking to me about some advices for my teeth, but I could not concentrate on it. I was worried about all the bloods I poured out. Like magic, however, next day I could not feel any pain about it. It was just like before I pull out the teeth except there were nothing in their places. Also I now can see the set of teeth are changing in a good way.
After the experience where I watched that what made me painful when I removed it could make me better with mo pain once after I removed it, I realized an important thing. It was that removement of something might be painful but if it is essential, it would not be hurt that much as I pass the time of removement and could even make me in better condition. Though I would not be able to avoid being nervous again the next time of going to the dentist's, I would not give up to go, if it is essential.

Formative experience from my past

Have you ever seen "Beethoven Virus" which is one of the famous soap opera in Korea? It is about main characters passion and love on classical music. I was a big fan, because I have been played violin for a long time. While watching the soap opera, I decided that I would be a member of any orchestra and play the violin to the mass of people if I were a university student. And the dream came true on September,11, 7.P.M at the concert hall of Chugye arts university as a member of HUFS Phill, the only and the best orchestra in HUFS.

I and other members of the HUFS Phill prepared a lot under the extremely hot weather. Though other members started to practice as soon as summer vacation had just begun, I started to practice at July because I had to go back to my home to see my whole family. After I came back to Seoul, I tried hard to catch up with others who had practiced so hard. I did my best not to skip every practice which held three days a week. I even went the practice room of the orchestra and played violin for 2 hours. These kinds of efforts eventually worked, so I could keep steps with others. I and other members of the orchestra went Yangpyeon to do extremely hard, tough practice night and day for a week. Lots of bugs and insects and hot weather interrupted me to practice, but I defeated them with my passion to succeed the performance. Though the semester began and made me busy, the practice continued and the day came. On September,11, I and other members played the music that we practiced so hard. The harmony of the music was so impressive and fascinating that even Beethoven might be surprised to the music. Although I took great amount of trivial mistakes, I thought that my efforts were rewarded so much during this performance.

After finishing the performance successfully, I learned two things. The first thing is that the harmony and union is the strongest thing in the world no matter how people faced on enormous troubles due to its success. The proverb 'practice makes perfect' really came to me during the hard and tough practice. Even thought it was not always happy. Sometimes I wanted to meet my friends and skip the practice time. But looking back now, it was so precious time because I could learn two lessons, have a chance to play music to the public, and meet lots of friends in the orchestra.

 Narrative Essay

Jeon Hyung Min 200704216

Are Korean Sports Heroes Really Fluent in English?

One of the areas where Korean media often gets it wrong is people's linguistic skills. Recently, there was a newspaper story about a girl who graduated top of the class from a university. The newspaper said she is gifted with languages and is fluent in four languages. This is as absurd as to say that there is a pianist who also wonderfully plays the violin, viola and cello. It simply can't be done. The same goes for sport stars. When a Korean athlete wins an important international competition and gives an interview in English with foreign reporters, soon stories appear in the Korean media about how he or she spoke flawless English. When listening to the actual tapes, however, they are often just good enough to express some basic ideas.

A case in point is Yuna Kim, one of the most popular figure skaters in Korea. After winning the world championship, she had interviews with foreign journalists in fluent English. Her English skills attracted favorable attention from Korean media. One newspaper reported that her English teacher was her mom, who had made her listen to English tapes from an early age, three to four hours a day while moving to and from the training spot. Now it sounds like the mom's dedication and the English tapes are the secret of Yuna's fluent English. Are they?

What about other Korean sports stars who speak good enough English to have interviews? Like famous soccer player Jisung Park, golf star Seri Park and Olympics gold medal winning swimmer Taehwan Park? Did they also listen to English tapes as kids? What they have in common is not a dedicated mom or English tapes but the confidence that comes from outstanding achievement in each field.

They mostly talk about what condition they were in during the game. For example, what was difficult, what was easy and how they hope they will continue to do well in the future. Thank you. That's about it. There shouldn't be much difficulty saying these things. However, the Korean media keeps producing exaggerated stories about celebrities speaking such wonderful English.

Our world-beating sports heros are not as flawless in English as when they compete on the field. Sometimes they win competitions and say a few words in English. That's all. Their English is not so good enough to cause feelings of inferiority and envy in Korea's stressed students and parents. Decent English skills are seriously difficult to acquire and many Korean students struggle to have a good command of English. Never underestimate the mastery of English.

p.77 first draft narrative essay 200901051

Learning how to ride a bike was a painful, but useful lesson that formed me partially to the person I am now. The process was so painful that I wanted to give up, but my father helped me and I succeeded in riding the bike. The learning process was a formative experience that taught that not giving up could mean success.

The most formative experience part of learning how to ride a bike was not learning how to ride it, but that even after falling several times keep trying to learn to ride the bike was the most formative experience. On the 1st year elementary school I received my first bike from my parents. It was all very exciting, but since I didn't know how to ride a bike my father promised me to teach me how to ride it the following weekend. On that weekend, my father taught me the basics of how to ride it. The first try was a big failure and fell on the group. The second try was even force. When I fell, I scratched my arm and started to bleed. I repeated this process a couple of times until I was sick of it and I wanted to give up. However, my father persuaded me to give it another try. He stood next to me and held me in such a way that I wouldn't fall again. This time I succeed and even rode a few meters on my own. That experience taught me that not giving up easily and being persistent was the best way to achieve a goal.

Learning new things and trying achieving a goal comes with challenges that will either keep challenging us to go on or to give up. Learning how to ride a bike was for me the necessary formative experience to teach me that in life nothing is easy and that giving up wasn't the solution to achieve a goal.

Betrayal of the Public Transportation

Introduction of Academic Writing

Friday 1-2

Prof. John Bahk-Halberg

200702742 HyeRi Lee

It was a cold winter around February, and I was in my winter vacation. I was looking forward to be a junior in March, while I was taking a winter school. At that time, I thought that I was such a diligent student in the winter school, and I had no doubt about it because I have never late for school. I have always used public transportation to go to school, and I loved it because it was quite accurate time table. However, soon I realize that there's nothing perfect every time, and my attitude about public transportation was greatly changed from that time.

It was my mid-term day of the winter school and the heavy snows were blowing outside. During the night, the snows are piled up on the ground thickly. Because I stayed all night to study three subjects, I was really tired when I was going to the Bucheon station by bus. It takes 10 to 15 minutes to go to the station, but it was delayed because of the heavy snow. It had been more than 20 minutes and the passengers were getting angry more and more. When I thought it will be better to go to the station by walk, the bus made a sudden stop with a loud noise of friction. Then, the bus driver said that the passengers have to get off from the bus and walk to the station. I was really worried that I will be late for the test. After I walked to the station, I was surprised that really many people were in stuck in the station platform. I could not take the subway more than 5 times because there are too many people. Because I leaved my house earlier than usual, I thought I could arrive on time. However, while I was in the subway, I found that two class was canceled because of the text message arrived. The last test was on 5 o'clock, so I had to wait for more than 6 hours.

From that day, I never leave my house just in time. Although it was because of the heavy snow, now I cannot believe the accuracy of the public transportation. Now I'm leaving my house more than 30 minutes earlier than usual time, so I'm not worry about the time anymore. The incident of that day taught me that there's no perfect transportation about the time in the world.

Wonderful teacher

It was the first morning that I was a senior of middle school. A horrible sound echoed around the corridor. "Our homeroom teacher is the BANDIT" some of my classmates shouted. The BANDIT was his nickname. The Image of a bandit is big, powerful and hairy. Also he was so muscular. He was so tall and big and he looked extremely powerful and tough. And also he has really hairy body. Because of his appearance, all of student in our school started to call him the BANDIT. All of the class sat down on chairs. In the classroom, the BANDIT was the only one standing in front of the class. And then there was only a silence. That was the beginning of a senior's life.

Generally seniors of middle school have to prepare for high school. So we had to study really hard. But I was a bad student who liked to hang out with my friends rather than study. I was an adolescent boy. My grades were getting decreased when I was a sophomore. I would skip almost every classes, both school and academy in order to hang out with my friends. I had lots of troubles concerning my family. But after had met him, I was changed. He made us come to school an hour earlier than other classes. When we were late, we were thrashed by his so called, 'power bat'. It was much bigger than baseball bats and much heavier. We could not be late. And also we had English and Chinese character exams everyday. Some classmates who were not good at the exams had to study after school. Because we were afraid of him, we could unite each other. But as time went by, we could see his passion. We could feel his enthusiasm. He always came to school an hour earlier than any other teachers and went back home an hour later than any other teachers. He spent his time and money for us although he had a family to support.  Therefore we started to like him gradually. In addition to the study, he also emphasized physical training. Almost every weekend we had soccer matches and we camped in school. Thus we could be united with all classmates and get higher grades than any other classes. We had really wonderful memories of senior.

He always said that "Enjoy it if you can't avoid." Since I graduated middle school I have met a lot of teachers. But he is the one I like most, respect most, and miss most. Whenever I face difficult situation, I recall his strong but warm words. I recall his extremely tough and bandit-looking but benignant face. I will always remember him, the best teacher.

A misspelled word on a placard

On translation mid-term, I lost some points due to misspelling. I misspelled 'foreignness'. I wrote only one N. I was little angry and sad when I was thinking about my mistake and I thought it is a big deal. And then suddenly an event from past occurred to me.

It was when I was 20 or 21. My friend and I had to make a placard. I was busy so my friend Lee Hanbit made it. She designed it and made it. When she brought the placard, I noticed that there was a misspelled word. Everybody except me seemed not to notice it and all of them boasted it. Actually it was well designed. It was so colorful and fancy. Even though she didn't have enough time to make it -because she was working at a company- she did really good job. Even she didn't sleep enough. But for me, what was important was her misspelling. The design, color and the efforts didn't matter. I started laughing. The misspelling was tiny but it was the only thing I could see. "Hey, look, you misspelled. What a stupid! You should correct it. Why don't you guys notice it?" I said. Then there was only silence for 5 seconds.  And after that horrible silence, she ran out. While she ran out of the room, I saw tears falling from her eyes. I heard her crying. Only then I noticed that I had done extremely rude and bad job. Until that time I have never seen her cry even though we are old friends. She hardly cries. I got out and apologized to her but it didn't work. I hurt her badly. She didn't accept my apology. She was really hurt and it took two weeks for her to accept my apology. During those two weeks I regretted much.

From that I learned something. I decided not to make fun of someone for their misspelling, English and illiteracy. After that day I faced similar situation but instead of making fun of a girl, I said "You seemed to make a typo but it is okay. Everybody makes a mistake." Unlike the past she appreciated me and I felt happy for what I had done.

Everybody have a very special story in their life. Mostly they are more dramatic than sitcoms or novels and I, also as a human, I have very interesting story in my life too. It was happened last year January, at Kun Guk university. In order to entrance the university in Korea, the student have to take Su-Nueng and put your score into only three university, divided in 3 parts and I already failed two. So this is the last chance to entry the university. I luckily passed the first session and the second session is to interview with the professors. So I was very nervous.

When I was doing the interview, my nose started to bleed. I didn't know until the professor noticed me what I am happening to me. I was very embarrassed and the rest of the interview I did really poor. I think there nothing more I have to say. I really want to dive in the the U Gan lake, which is very big lake located middle in the Kun Guk university. Later as everybody expected, I failed to enter the university.

How can you believe that nose will bleed at the interview? After that day, I believe that anything can happen in the life. I didn't believe that things will be clear anyway in my life. rather than, I started believe that, I have to accept the situation and do best on my position from that on. That both funny and sorrow experience had changed me a lot.

Physical Punishment Vs Sense of Duty

200704216

Jeon Hyung Min

Controversies over physical punishments have been issued for a long time in Korea. Pros and cons are carrying and holding their views to one another. Corporal punishments might bring good control of students to teachers, which will eventually make the school environment more controlled, arranged and in order. Inflicting physical pains to students, however, could make students feel humiliated, mortified and insulted. Still, it's not quite sure which is better way for the school education but, in my case, physical punishments definitely proved its point.

In my middle school years, I met an English teacher who was actually a newcomer and young. He was so passionate about the way he taught us that very often he hit students in classes with a strong stick he always carried. Every class, we had to take word tests and sometimes we were called our name, brought onto the stage standing in front of the black board and solved grammar questions. When we were not able to correct the questions, the fearful strong stick was wielded on our butts. English class was literally a horror to all of us. But what was really interesting was that all students started studying English before and after classes. It was really easy to find a student carrying English word memos in shirt pockets and memorizing English words sitting on school benches or in classes. I was one of those who studied English only to avoid physical punishments at that time and I was also one of those who hated the English teacher and even cursed him every time got punishments.

After my middle school years, however, my ill feelings toward him got changed quite gradually. I entered high school and there I realized how valuable and important lessons he gave us were. English turned out to be the strongest subject to me. I became very confident of English and I even started to think that I would become an English interpreter in my later life. Even though my English study began only to avoid physical punishments, I actually gained what I desperately needed. Maybe to some of my middle school friends, the English teacher was just a Grim Reaper but, to me, he was a great teacher with full sense of duty.

Week 7 assignment

English Teacher

During my middle and high school years, I have met many fabulous teachers who taught me knowledge and life. Most of them were foreigners since I spent all of my middle school in international school in Hong Kong. Among them there is one teacher who really impressed me by heart. She was my English teacher in my sixth and seventh grade. I can definitely say that she is the one who led me to today's me. Thanks to her, English is not a subject that I should memorize or study, but a tool to communicate with my foreign friends.

She taught English in a very special way. Since all students were not native English speakers, she focused on how to get students familiar with English. There was a project which even now I remember very clearly. It was recording our dubbing of famous novel 'Christmas Carol' by Charles Dikins. For one whole semester, she and our class engrossed in this project. At first, students were not interested in the project since they were only used to memorizing vocabularies and finishing worksheets. In addition, students did not know each other because it was just a start of the year. However, as time passed on she led the class to excitement. I still do not recognize how she created such enjoyable class environment. As we learned how to pronounce correctly and followed original dubbing artists, we became closer and more interested in the project. At the end of the semester, we successfully finished recording our dubbing. I seriously benefited a lot from this project. Because it was my first year in Hong Kong, I was not only bad at speaking English, but also had not friend at all. Fortunately, through this project, I could be close with class mates and even be able to communicate with them easily. For me who was totally new in foreign world, her way of teaching was the very lesson needed.

Through her project, I perceived English not as a subject that I should memorize with brain, but another culture that I have to understand with my heart. That is how I could study English without boredom and major in English-related major.  If I ever meet her again, I would like to thank her for what she taught me. She helped me very much by encouraging me warmly when I had difficult time with English. If it had not been for her, I probably would not have put effort in learning English this much. She is the teacher who I want to recommend for my friends who hate English.

 Jeon Yejin/ 201003023

 Special Teaching

December is a very meaningful month for most people. Why? The main reason would be the Christmas. Also, December is at the center of winter and many people like to see a white village covered with snow. Unfortunately December is the worst time for some people which even let them to try to kill themselves. In Korea, there has been astounding news about the suicide of high school students or graduates who took the College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT) before about a month ago from then. What makes them to decide to suicide after they finally finish the test? Well, there is just one reason that most of Koreans could understand. They were depressed by their grades in CSAT. (It does not mean that it can be justified, though.) Like this, high school students in Korea get a lot of stress from the results of their studies and one of the factors that make this worse is the expectation, pressure from their parents and teachers. I was one of them too. However, I could pass the days very positively by lots of people near me. In this essay, I want to write the experience about one of them, the class teacher of my second grade in high school who planted the belief in myself in my mind.

When I was in my high school days, I was very nervous about my future. Though I have been finding out making a goal is about how I think about myself, I couldn't believe myself strongly then and also couldn't stop being nervous unless I made sure that all things are ready. However, one day of the days when I was in second grade, the class teacher told me to stay in class after school. I became worried because I thought he might scold me for blowing up the midterm. I waited the teacher for a while in the class alone. Finally he came. I was very nervous. However, the next few hours were totally different from what I thought about and even gave me the power to go on until the end of the high school days. He asked me about my dream. I answered. He asked some more questions why I did not feel so good. I answered again that I was worried about my future. Then he said nothing but a sentence that I can make it. And I will make it. I couldn't answer about this because I started to cry after then. I was shocked because nobody took my words so seriously and sincerely as he did. After I calmed down, he gave me some advice for the ways to make my goal. When I stood up to go home, he added that he was in a great hopes that I would come back to school becoming a great person who I wanted to be. He said to me like this in every moment whenever we happened to meet after then.

There are a lot of people, who I have deeply appreciated. Still, I think I could not come over all the negative thoughts I had in my high school days without the class teacher in my second grade. His words made me much stronger in my mind. I often go to my high school and talk with him. He does not stop to say those powerful words to me. I thank God for letting me become one of the students of such a good teacher.

Week 6 Assignment by Jang Jun Hwa

200802967 Jang Jun Hwa

My Teacher, My Dream Keeper

"I am really, really want to see movie director Jang Jun Hwa someday and I am sure that I can"

This is what she said to me in her last class. My Korean teacher was in hospital, so she taught Korean in place of the sick teacher for a while. It was when I was in the second grade of the high school. She had never forced me to study and always advised me not to give up my dream. She is not only the best teacher I have ever met, but also my dream keeper.

In order to talk about her, first of all, I need to talk about myself at the age of 18. I used to rebel against all my teachers. I went to school two or three times a week. Even though I was at school, I stayed at school infirmary or rooftop, listening to music. Of course, I was not interested in studying at all. I just wanted to study film and photography. I thought that it was useless for me to live out my dream to study languages, math, science and to enter university after taking the college entrance examination, which is a so-called "Korean style study" All teachers who knew I hoped to study film did not understand me and even laughed at my future goal. Some teachers said, "Are you truly hoping to be a movie director?" "I know that you will give up your dream soon. You are not going to earn money. It is a totally unfeasible dream. Why don't you study hard to go to a prestigious university?" However, the short-term Korean teacher did not talk to me in an unpleasant way. Unlike other teaches, she always stressed the importance of determined goals from her first class to the end. She taught us that it was important both studying hard and thinking about what we wanted to be. Since then, I thought that she was different from other teachers. Although she was not a close teacher, I was sure that she would understand what I want to be. One day, I told my homeroom teacher that I decided to stop the high school and to go to America to study film. All teachers persuaded me to graduate high school first. Still, I did not change my mind. I had the belief that I will be a successful movie director after studying film school in America even if I do not have high school diploma. After hearing that I wanted to quit the school, she called me over to talk together. I expected that she were going to persuade me to keep studying in high school and talk about a need for university and how useless my plan and dream were. Unexpectedly, she wanted to listen to me before talking to me. I told her my idea that studying in high school was unimportant to make a good film and my plan that I was going to study English first for two years and then, enter film school. After that, she said, "Your plan can be good. I think in America you will learn more advanced skills. I believe that you will be one of the best film directors, because you are very eager to make film." She stared at me, "However, I think people who can not do what they have to do now can never do what they want to do. What do you think?" I was really shocked, because I did not expect that nobody told me in that way. She hit the nail on the head.

Because of her, I did not leave school and now I study English in university. In addition, I have never regretted that I did not quite high school. I do not give up my dream. I just change the way of being a film director a little bit. From her, I learned that I looked to the future with a more long-term view. I really appreciate her advice and I want to call her "my dream keeper"

Assignment week 6 : Wonderful Teacher

Writing

Fri 1,2

In Korea, almost every high school seniors must go through the hard time due to the scholastic ability test which Korean students should take to enter the university, Su-neung. Because of just one big test, quite big part of Korean student's life is made up. So, the senior year in the high school is very important for Korean students. The school, family and teachers should make the best condition for student who is going through the senior year so that they can concentrate just on studying. In these circumstances, the home room teacher is quite important.

When I was a senior in high school, just a year ago, my home room teacher was a man with gray hair although he isn't that old. His name is Tae-woo, Sin. He was very gentle, nice and kind to us all the time. He always really cared about us. We should stay at school until 11 at night when we were senior. We were quite tired, of course, to study until late at night. But I think he should have been tired as well because he also had a lot of work to do, a lot of students to care, a lot of things to teach. The most important thing is that he should have stayed at school until 11 with us, too! Nevertheless, He didn't lose the kind smile. Sometimes he called us and gave something to eat, some useful ideas to study, or the words really cheer us.

I am one of the students who did quite better on Su-neung compared to usual. I think he did a quite big rule for that. He always encouraged me. I was quite confident and not that nervous on D-day due to his encouragement. Thanks to him, I could come to this university. I miss him. I really appreciate for his kind, careful, and cheerful words that he gave me. I appreciate the confidence he gave to me that would be with me for the rest of my life.

Week 6 assignment: writing an essay about wonderful teacher

Can you remember the time that you just entered elementary school? Many people answered at this question saying "No." However, I would say, "Yes" due to Mr. Ku, my homeroom teacher at first grade in elementary school. His name is Hichan Ku, about 50 years old at that time. He was tall as a giraffe and thin as a twig of a tree. He usually smiled broadly to his students. Mr. Ku is my real teacher among the teachers that I have met.

In my memory, he was warm-hearted, passionate and children-liking teacher. It was the field day that I found passion and sense of children-liking mind. At the time, I was bored out of my skull because we lost all the game. There was nothing to do instead of sitting on the chair in the classroom. To break out the boring situation, I tried to slip through the space between the back and the seat of a chair. My legs, back, and chest succeeded but my head was completely caught. I wanted to deny the truth that I had faced, but I being nervous was the only thing that I could during the moment. Waiting someone to rescue me and thinking 'What if I couldn't be rescued?', I was worried about my future. Then Mr. Ku quickly came in to the classroom with strong, long, metal pipe and removed the back which blocked me without hesitance. I felt not only the freedom and relieved but also his warm-heart and passion to me.

Though I met a great amount of wonderful and great teachers, I would choose Mr. Ku if someone ask me to pick the best teacher. He had proper traits such as passion, love, warm heart as well as proficiency to teach little kids. Though I couldn't keep in touch with him, the time when he taught me won't be forgotten.

Wonderful teacher first draft 200901051

We meet a lot of teachers in our life, but one particular teacher from my second year middle school is still fresh in my memories. She was my economy teacher who taught me the importance of economy. Also because of her my love for economy used to start.

My second year middle school economy teacher taught me the different important points of economy. Her teaching method was not special or it didn't have some special trick to it. However she was very patient in explaining the economy terms that most students didn't understand well. For example, during her first lessons she taught us, we had a hard time to understand the value of currency. Suddenly our teacher used to bring out a whole much of bank notes and she start to explain the value of currency by show us the different bank notes and their value. Thanks to that many students started to understand what the value of currency meant. Another good example of how well our economy teacher good explain something is that once instead of writing down the theory of consumer VS producer on the black board, she started drawing the whole economic cycle of consumer VS producer. The strangest part is that she didn't write a single word on the black board, but everyone understood what the teacher was trying to teach us. There are many other examples on how good of a teacher she is, but the most valuable lesson she ever gave was the first quote, on our first lesson she said. She said, those who want to be rich and live a wealthy life listen and learn. Surprisingly it was very effective because unlike for other classes, the students really paid attention.

All by all, considering the facts about my economy teacher, it reminds me what my father always used to say about good teachers. He always said that good teachers are like good salesmen who are able to sell dirt as if it was pure gold. With that my father meant that teachers should be able to sell their subject matter to their students as if they were selling dirt as if it was pure gold.

Wonderful teacher

It was the first morning that I was a senior of middle school. A horrible sound echoed around the corridor. "Our homeroom teacher is the BANDIT" some of my classmates shouted. The BANDIT was his nickname. He was so muscular. He was so tall and big and he looked extremely powerful and tough. And also he was really hairy.

But, after had met him, I was changed. In Addition to the study, he also emphasized physical training. Almost every weekend, we had soccer matches and we camped in school.

I was such a arrogant student in my sixteen. I was about to graduate my middle school, and finding some good English academies because my father wanted me to study there. However, I thought that there was nobody to teach me as a teacher, because teachers are some annoying people who are just shouting "To study hard!" everyday. Moreover, because I struggled against an Korean teacher for 3 years, I was sick and tired of teachers. Anyway I found an academy and started to go there, and there was a most weird teacher I ever met. My opinion about teachers was always correct, I thought again.
What is worse was that he was my homeroom teacher. I was an adolescent girl, so it was hard to understand his exhilarating, too exhilarating everyday. He always laughed loudly, and even in his English class, he seemed very excited because of the thought that he could teach us the world of English, which is so marvelous. At first, I really hated to see in my academy, but before I was aware, I became to enjoy his class. Indeed, he was a good english teacher because I never forget what I learned at that time until now. He knew how to make students feel fun when they study English.
Because of his effort, the only subject I'd liked to study was English when I was an high school student. I felt really sorry when I heard that he had to go to America, but I never thought that it was the end of the relationship between he and me. Now it has been about 6 years, but I'm still in communication with him. Also, I'm majoring in English, so I think he is the most be influential teacher in my life. It was lucky that I met him in my adolescent age.

Almost everybody lived their some of the age as a student. So many of the people had met many type of teacher and because of there are so many of the teachers everyone have their best or worst teacher in their life. As a one of students, I also have my best teacher too. Youn Suk Nam, math teacher at my Jae Su academy was the most great teacher ever I met. Bald hair, high cheekbone, curved waist he doesn't look so hansome or reliable.

Last year, I was in the hopeless times. There was nothing I have to rely on. Every days was sorrowful and I lost the passion of the life. The academy was like a prison and everywhere is watched by CCTV. So many behaivors are restricted including using cellphone, PMP, and It was too awful life. I was almost at the last point to tolerate in their academy. At that time, he was not great teacher in my mind. He was just one of the teacher and in fact, he is not really a good teacher. But when I met him for asking the math problem, he said what I can never forgot anymore. "You look so honest that I can know it just looking at your face." Only just that word, I started to study again. I don't know he was saying just for cheer me up. But It made me the motive to study again. That winter, finally I successfully entered the H.U.F.S and now I living happy again.

I cannot remember him from that day. He's not teaching well. But anyway he helped many students mental health and I believed that so many student will be helped like me. But it was such a sad story that when I came back to the academy at this summer for meeting him again and wanted to say thank for him, he was dismissed by not teaching well and in now I don't know where he is now.

200601825 Hyesu Ahn descriptive essay first draft

A couple of days ago, the subway brawl video spread quickly on the Internet. The video from Youtube spread in a second. Many people watched the video and even it was shown on the news. It is about small brawl on the subway between an old woman and a young girl.  Many people were interested in it because it was quite rare situation for Koreans. Because of Confucianism, all Koreans have respected old people. But after watch the video, many people were shocked because it was far different from Korean culture. If a foreigner watch that video, they may not think of Korean`s respecting old people culture. But, still there are a lot of young Korean people who respect old people. In our daily life, we can see them often.

In our daily life, we can see many kind young people respect weak old people in various places. On the subway, as opposed to the video, even though there are seats for old people, a lot of young people give their seats to the old. It`s not mandatory, it`s natural for them. Also you can see exactly the same situation on the bus. Walking the street, you can see the young people help old people. For example, the young carry old people`s heavy bags or luggage, or take old people to their destination. They do that because the old are weaker than them. And almost all of them look completely polite and courteous.

Some people say that Korean culture of respecting old people seems to become faint recently. They also say that Korean young people don`t respect old people anymore. But we can see many polite young Korean people in our daily life. On the subway, bus, and street. Of course at our home, schools, and company. Judging from these facts, Korea is still the country of courteous people in the East, and the young people are still polite and respectful for old people.

Assignment 5

Koreans can earn quite much money once a year just by 'saebae'. It's a New Year's Day. In Korea, people celebrate the New Year's Day. Usually, on New Year's Day, all family members gather, eat lot of delicious food, watch TV, play traditional games and celebrate the New Year's Day together.

For me, New Year's Day is very important. Because of the special holiday, all family members gather. So I can see my cousins, uncles, aunts who are hard to see. I can spend time with the people I love. Every year, I make precious memories with my family. Also, one more thing that makes me to wait for the day is the 'Saebae' money which I can get when I saebae to my uncles, aunts, grandparents, parents. Saebae is a deep bow that young people do to older people. It is quite much, so it feels very good when I get money from saebae.

Now, I'm waiting for the next New Year's Day. I want to visit my grandparents and meet my family members and spend time with them.

Whenever I say that my favorite food is beef intestines, almost every foreigner says that they can't believe. Even some people don`t know what intestines are. When I explain what intestines are, many people say it's disgusting. Even they hate my taste.

Yes, beef intestines look disgusting because they are tubes in a cow. Beef intestines are  indigestion organizations. Although they look disgusting, they taste great and smell tasty. Some say that intestines are not clean food, but it's not true. They are very clean food because people wash it very strictly. And they have a lot of collagen which is good for women's skin. Also intestines are really good for men's stamina.

The reason that I strongly like intestines is not only they are good for health, but also it's because of the atmosphere. I eat intestines always with my true friends at night. We have some serious conversation and we release our stress or sadness through that time. The atmosphere makes intestines' flavor better and the conversation we have makes me feel better. That's why I like to eat intestines.

 Korean New Year's Day

Korea has two big national holidays. One is 'Chu Seok', the national holiday similar to that of the U.S. called Thanks giving day. The other is the New Year's Day that is called 'Seol Nal' in Korean. There are some of interesting traditions on both Seol Nal and Chu Seok and I will introduce some of traditions mainly about Seol Nal.

On the day of Seol Nal, Koreans visit their grandparents, parents, or relatives to enjoy the New Year together. One of the most interesting traditions is New Year's bow that Koreans give to seniors. The aim of this tradition is largely for wishing the better health of seniors who get the bows and the youngers get cash gifts from seniors for giving bows. What many Koreans like in the day is 'dduk-guk' which is a soup cooked with slices of rice cake, eggs, beef and a lot of vegetables. There's an old saying in Korea related to this food that eating dduk-guk makes a child grown a year older. There's one more interesting tradition. In the morning of Seol Nal, Koreans hold a memorial service for ancestors.

There is, however, a problem related to major Korean holidays. It's severe traffic congestion. Since almost all of Koreans leave their home for visiting relatives or seniors, almost all of highways and roads are crowded with cars making travel hours at least 3 times longer than typical days. But it also can be a good point considering the duration of the major holidays. Due to the heavy traffic problems that take many hours from travelers, it's been a tradition that the national holidays should be continued at least for three days.

Discount? Enuri!

Suppose you buy apples for 3,000 won, bananas for 3,000 won and oranges for 5,000 won. A Canadian fruit seller prices them at 11,000 won. A Chinese fruit seller prices them at 11,000 won as well. However, a Korean fruit seller may sell them to you for 10,000 won. The reason is "Enuri" Enuri, which is similar to a special discount, is one of unique cultural traditions in Korea.

People in Korea feel a deep affection between people through Enuri. For examples, when you go to the Korean traditional markets, you will find a seller and a customer talking so loudly. Don't misunderstand that they raise their voice. Maybe they are just doing Enuri. The customer asks the seller to give discount or throw in a few more. Enuri, which is a pure Korean word, means that sellers can give customers a discount or more goods at their discretion. But there is one big difference between discount and Enuri. Through Enuri, you can buy a product below its production price. Although sellers make a loss for the first time, they get regular customers, because they go to the same store with thanks for Enuri. In addition to the commercial reason, sellers who offer Enuri care not only themselves but also their customers. Koreans have a strong sense of solidarity and they hope to be wealthy all together. Therefore, people share what they have with others in order to help each other.

Nowadays, Instead of the Korean traditional markets, websites where people sell and buy with Enuri are popping up. Still, Enuri spirit has disappeared gradually. In a hard-hearted modern society, Enuri can remind people of love and affection.

Pungmulnori

In western society, there is orchestra, In Korea, there is 'Pungmulnori' which encounters various kinds of Korean traditional musical instruments. Pungmulnori originated from very old history of Korea. Farmers formed pungmylnori band to play music for various ceremonies mostly related to farming. Pungmulnori contains culture and many feelings of Korean farmers.

Everything about pungmulnori is related to farming. That is because pungmulnori is the music of farmers. First, although there are many musical instruments, there are four main instruments that lead the band. They are jing, book, kkwaenggwari, and janggu. Each of them represents nature since nature is the most important factor to consider when farming. In fact, jing has the sound of wind, while book sounds like cloud. Janggu represents rain and kkwaenggwari sounds like thunder. Moreover, most of the time, people formed pungmulnori band to lessen their hardship of farming and strengthen themselves by singing and dancing. They also played at the start of farming season to pray for successful harvest and at the end of the season to thank the nature. In this respect, Korean ancestors gained energy and confidence through pungmulnori.

Recently, as lesser people have interest in pungmulnori, a famous janggu player Kim Duk Soo remodeled pungmulnori to samulnori. Samulnori encounters much fewer number of instruments but equally sounds energetic as pungmulnori. What is important is that modern people are still interested and eager to maintain old tradition.

Chinese Culture

According to the chinese 50000 years history, there have kinds of traditional festivals. And depends on traditional festivals which day have we are own custom like food and which food is the most important in festivals day. I am going to talk about the days DongZhi Jie(Winter Solstice), DuanWu Jie(Dragon Boat Festival),YuanXiao Jie(the Lantern Festival),ZhongQiu Jie(the Moon Festival ) and so on.

First, Winter Solstice which days we eat HunDun which is similar with dumpling, But their very different. HunDun just boil in the water never for fry and the shape of skin is square and the dumpling is staple food but HunDun is almost snack. The other food we have to eat is Tangyuan, which is made of rice inside of seame and peanut.

Second is Dragon Boat Festival, in that days we always prepare eating glutinous rice dumplimg. Which's made of leaf cover with rice and tie with thread and steamed. Which is my favorite food.

Third is the Lanten Restival. In which day we eat Yuanxiao, that is also made of rice inside of seame and peanut but different with TangYuan. Yuanxiao is bigger and soft than TangYuan. But their also cousin.

Fourth is the moon festival which day we eat mooncake which is made of wheat flour and inside if peanut or red mean or the other things. The reason why called mooncake because of which days moon is the most round and chinese also get together eat mooncake see the round moon.

Imagine you are at first visit in Korea. You have taken the subway to go to the place you're planning to stay while in Korea. In subway, you see a person sitting at the seat in front of you suddenly stands up. Because you are so tired and with lots of stuffs in hands, you feel to take the seat. At the very point, however, the person says to an old woman who stands a little bit far from the seat: Please take this seat. What do you think you are going to feel like? Isn't it weird that the former appoints the next person who's going to sit in there? Well, this is the moment when one of the most unique traditions of Korea appears. In Korea, there are a lot of duties for people in their attitude toward other ages.

The duties in treating other ages can be divided into two parts by its subject- the elder's and the younger's. As for the elder, the old people should be the one with responsibility and wisdom. For example, when Koreans decide something important in their lives, they mostly consult with the elder people near them. Also, in New Year's Day of Korea, most Koreans having visited their parents or other elder relatives make a special bow to them and ask them some deep wisdoms of life. In contrast, the younger should respect the elder's decisions and try to reply the kindness or teachings of the elder. Especially, this can be shown well in the social custom that a son or daughter should take care of their parent as they get older.

It has been thought of as the main reason of these kinds of tradition that Korea had been a complete agrarian community for a long time in the past. However, Korea has changed. There is no need, or rather it's impossible for Korean people to live all along with their family. For the reason, the tradition of attitudes toward other ages, which has been inherited in the relationship with family members, has been weakened slowly.

Full-Moon Day of the Lunar New Year

Introduction of Academic Writing
Friday 1-2
Prof. John Bahk-Halberg

Do you know that Koreans drink alcohol early in the morning on the first full-moon day of the lunar new year? This is called "ear-quickening wine", and Koreans drink it not to be deceived by any people. There are so many traditional things we do on the first full-moon day of the lunar new year, and each things have special meanings and proper time to do. This is because Korean ancestors thought all the time is meaningful from the night before the full-moon day to the night of the full-moon day. Koreans think that this day is really important and meaningful because they think it is another starting point of the year.

Like Koreans think that the day is the another starting point of the year, they also believe they can stay healthy and tranquil by doing those traditional behaviors on the proper times. About the night before the full-moon day, kids cannot sleep because there is a popular superstition that if a person sleeps on the night before the full-moon day, his eyebrows become white. I think maybe this is a just kind of kidding by adults. In the morning of the full-moon day, people wake up and break the shells of the nuts with their teeth to avoid swelling in that year. They have to say nothing until the break the shells. They also drinking ear-quickening wine. For their meal, they eat the rice made with the five cereals, and a sweet rice dish to stay healthy. At last, on the night of the full-moon day, Koreans wish their prayers to the full-moon.

Some of these traditional behaviors seem a bit superstitious, but through those, we can see ancestors' wisdom and thought from the past. Also, I could know how ancestors tried to live healthy and tranquil. Maybe this is one of most important things which reflect culture itself. I think we descendants have responsibility to inherit these traditional heritiges.
