해양 생태계에서 매우 중요하고 광범위한 동물성 플랑크톤을 감염시키는 세계 최대의 해양 바이러스가 확인됐다고 사이언스 데일리가 보도했다. 캐나다 브리티시 컬럼비아 대학 연구진은 바이러스 중에 가장 큰 미미바이러스와 비슷한 카페테리아 로엔베르겐시스(Cafeteria roenbergensis) 바이러스가 일부 세포 생물체보다도 큰 게놈을 갖고 있으며 `생명체'와 `무생물'의 경계를 모호하게 만드는 복잡한 유전체를 가진 것으로 나타났다고 미국립과학원회보(PNAS) 최신호에 발표했다. 연구진은 "보유 유전자의 수에 따라 바이러스를 작고 단순한 유기체로 보는 것이 고전적 개념이었지만 이 바이러스에서 발견된 유전자 구조의 상당 부분은 DNA와 RNA, 단백질, 당질 등의 생산에 필요한 많은 유전자를 비롯, 생명체인 세포질 유기체에서만 그 존재가 예상됐던 것"이라고 밝혔다. 바이러스는 살아있는 숙주의 세포 바깥에서는 복제할 수 없으며 세포가 제공하는 단백질에 의존하기 때문에 종종 이런 성질이 `살아있는' 유기체와 `무생물'을 구분하는 경계가 돼 왔다. 그러나 거대 바이러스는 복제에는 숙주 세포를 필요로 하지만 복제에 필요한 대부분의 단백질을 스스로의 게놈 안에서 암호화하기 때문에 이런 정의에 부합하지 않는다. 연구진은 1990년대 미국 텍사스주 근해에서 발견된 이 바이러스의 게놈에 다른 어떤 해양 바이러스보다도 많은 약 73만개의 염기 쌍이 들어있다는 사실을 발견했다. 이보다 많은 염기 쌍을 가진 유일한 바이러스는 담수 미미바이러스인 아칸트아메바 폴리파가(Acanthamoeba polyphaga)로 120만쌍의 염기 쌍을 갖고 있다. 카페테리아 로엔베르겐시스 바이러스는 바다 먹이 사슬에서 핵심적인 위치를 차지하는 동물성 플랑크톤을 숙주로 삼는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 연구진은 "동물성 플랑크톤이 식물성 플랑크톤을 잡아먹는 것이 해양 및 담수계의 탄소 이동 및 양분 재순환의 주요 통로라는 사실은 잘 알려져 있지만 이 과정에서 바이러스가 어떤 역할을 하는지는 학자들도 모른다"면서 "확실한 것은 이 바이러스가 생태적으로 중요한 거대 해양 바이러스 집단들 가운데 하나라는 것뿐"이라고 말했다.

Steve Jobs has again unveiled their new iPod Touch generation. iPod series are now called portable media player, rather than a mere music player due to its surprising functions. The series have developed and is still developing, gaining more attention and interest of public. I believe that iPod products are one of the most significant inventions that had huge impact on human in my lifetime.

 

 The key of iPod series is simplicity in design and function. What I am focusing is not the success but its mass appeal, meaning how it became so popular globally. Not only in US, but also in other various countries, iPod series leads the trend. Whole world is fascinated with simplicity of the Apple's products. When first iPod series were unveiled, people were amazed by the simple design of it. There are no complicated extra devices. Just white. Compared to other music players, iPod series were very simple with only screen and touch wheel. The thought of controlling the product with only one touch wheel was very revolutionary idea for people who always had to click many things. This product groundbreaking design caught many people's attention, especially the youth. Not only this, Apple Inc. also offered free software called iTunes that could enable users to easily organize their music by themselves. iPod series were developed very quickly with public responses reflected thoroughly. These factors caused the series to be the trend and fashion item for not only American youth, but those around all over the world. However, some complain that iPod series are too much expensive regarding the quality of the series. On the other hand, I believe that they are worth such prize because the simple design that attracted many people and creative way of organizing music with free software.

 

 Music is indispensable in human life. It has always been that way and it will in the future. I seriously think that music is beneficial as it comforts our mind and affect positively. Therefore, music is good, but when you listen to music with iPod that is better. iPod has smoothly absorbed into human life and that is what Steve Jobs wanted it to be. That is what he thinks is the coolness about iPod and so am I.
