TV and Education

Have you ever been scolded by your parents for watching TV too long? For most parents, education of their children is usually on their mind. For that reason few parents let their children watch TV for the time the children want to. However when parents think about their children's education, they hope their children not just do well on their academic education but also hope their children can find their talents and what they really interested in. At this point, I think we have something really important that to make the definition of before talking about the relationship between TV and children's education. Because we need to know what is the purpose of education to see what TV programs actually do for children from the educational point of view.

So what is education and its purpose? In Online Etymology Dictionary made by Douglas Harper, we can find that the word educate is derived from a Latin word educare which means 'bring up, rear' and it is related to educere which stands for 'bring out, lead forth'. Also it says that the earliest record of using the word educate as the meaning of 'provide schooling' is the one of 1580s. Nowadays though the meaning of education is slightly different from culture to culture, most of countries use the word children's education in the narrower sense, schooling. However, through the derivation of the word education we can know what the starting point of education is: to raise a child as a man who can survive in a society and to make a child discover and develop one's talent. Then how much TV is worth to watch in this sense of education? It can be shown in two features of TV. First, TV has the audience who pay for watching the programs on it. TV is probably the most popular media that people receive information from the most. For TV's popularity, it cannot help broadcasting something practical with a lot of well-organized information to make the audience understand. This allows children to get some information about farther and more practical information about the subject they are interested in or maybe they become interested in while they watching TV. The other main feature of TV is that it can take there are various (more than five in average) channels on TV. Recently, there are a huge amount of channels which is already made and each of them eagerly tries to make programs specialized for some audience. Here is a point. For the reason I mentioned already, which says TV has audience, the programs focused on some culture of a society (for specialize their programs) have to attract people in other culture like finding common things of them. In other words, they deal with diverse subjects but also let someone who don't know or are not interested in them be attracted.

Of course it would be true that TV can affect children's emotions or other sensitive points of them negatively because it is too realistic or commercial. However, I think it can be controlled by their parents or themselves like other media such as books, sites on the internet, or magazines, newspapers. What I want to say is it's another way of learning things. What is different about TV from them is that it cannot make a child's reading skills better, but a child would have more fun in learning things with it.

  1. It was quiet a interesting story. You have title and three paragraph essay. Your hook makes me very interesting although I am against your idea. You write where you got your information that I can trust your idea. But I just wonder at the last graph how about write 'some' instead of 'of course' that make your opinion more stronger? I think It could be better.

  2. 1.You have three paragragh including introduction, body, and conclusion.

    2. Your hook attract readers' eyes because of the real cases that we can find near us.
I also noded and started to read your essay, too.
And enough background information is contained in your introduction paragrahgh.

    3. I think you want to write about the TV's positive effect to children education.
But I was hard to find the topic, because I think it is not written on the introduction paragragh.
It might be better to write a topic sentence in the paragragh.

    4. There are enough facts and reasons that support your topic.
Also, you quoted the definition and origin of education. It appeals readers to read it.
And you said that the most people have TV in their home and TV provieds various kinds of things to watch.
I think it supports your topic well.

    5. I think your essay is little bit difficult to read, because of long sentences.
To make what you say clar, it is better to shorten your sentences.

    6. I understand what you say.

Also it says that the earliest record of using the word ‘educate’ as the meaning of 'provide schooling' is the one of 1580s. Nowadays, though the meaning of education is slightly different from culture to culture, most of countries use the word children's education in the narrower sense, schooling. The other main feature of TV is that there are a lot of programs about various themes on TV. Recently, there are a huge amount of channels and each of them eagerly tries to make programs specialized for some audience to make them set their TV channels on them. Here is a point. TV programs focusing on some culture of a society to specialize their programs have to attract people in other culture by, for example, finding common things of them. In other words, TV programs try to deal with diverse subjects but at the same time have to make their programs as something that can attract people with no interest with the them.

Some TV programs might have negative effects on children's emotions or let them fall into a cultural bias because it is too realistic or commercial.
