A Gift that Jeju Island Gave Me

When you think of Jeju Island, what comes to your mind? Tangerines? Mt. Halla? Horses? As for me, I would say "my childhood" At my age of 4, my family moved to Jeju Island by the reason of my father's job. In Jeju, no one knew my family. Accordingly, we held ourselves together and spent most of time together. Even nearly 20 years after I left there, I still cherish the memory in Jeju.

For many years I lived in Jeju, my family had done the same thing every weekend – Picnic! I got up myself because of mouthwatering smells which wafted up from the kitchen. My mother usually made a pizza for lunch. While she cooked, my father checked his old car. Even if his car was somewhat battered, we liked to go driving to the suburbs in it. The musty smell of that car became a piece of my childhood memories as well. My father did not decide where to go on purpose. He just drove along the coastal road. My order brother and I always sang the song loudly with all the car windows open, so the car itself may have seemed animated radio. Tired from singing, we admired the scenery without a word. Also, I enjoyed a refreshing air and unobstructed views of the vast blue sea. In order to have lunch, we were looking for completely deserted place. Finally, we parked the car at the top of a low hill which overlooked the sea below. I was so overwhelmed by the beauty of the landscape that I could not say anything for a while.

Once a year, I visit Jeju Island. The apartment I lived, alleys I ran up and down and the playground I have played over a thousand times……  Everything is struck in my mind as ever. I feel really blessed to have priceless childhood memories in Jeju Island. They are a gift that I received from Jeju Island.
